FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TERRACE, BC – June 24, 2025 – The Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance (RBA) has launched a new website to provide clear, accessible information about the many new regional infrastructure projects planned, underway or complete, which are being funded by the 2024 Northwest BC Regional Funding Agreement.
Along with a brand-new layout, the website provides key information, images and statistics on the RBA member governments’ numerous infrastructure projects; the RBA’s mission and operating structure; more information about the funding agreement; and an updated project timeline highlighting the history of the RBA, which began its advocacy work in 2013.
“We are excited to be able to share information on the projects being made possible by the Provincial funding,” said City of Terrace Mayor and Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Board Director, Sean Bujtas. “It’s critically important that residents, businesses, industry, and all stakeholders across the region are able to see the progress and long-term planning taking place that benefits every corner of Northwest BC.”
In 2024, the Province of British Columbia’s Budget included a transformative $250 million investment over 5 years for the 21 local governments represented by the RBA. These funds will be used to upgrade and expand critical infrastructure, including modern water and wastewater systems, improved roads, transit, and public safety facilities — vital services for building and sustaining liveable communities.
With this landmark investment, the RBA local governments are empowered to shape the region’s future by driving economic growth, creating well-paying jobs, and building vibrant communities that will thrive for generations to come. Another key component of this work includes strengthening relationships with neighboring First Nations via projects that support reconciliation and shared prosperity.
“This commitment to Northwest BC First Nations is integrated into our long-term development plans, ensuring that industrial growth benefi ts all communities and honors our partnerships with First Nations,” said City of Prince Rupert Mayor and North Coast Regional District Board Director, Herb Pond. “Moving forward, our collective focus is on developing sustainable, forward-looking infrastructure that meets today’s needs and anticipates tomorrow’s challenges, keeping our communities safe, connected, and prosperous.”
As many long-overdue infrastructure projects now get underway, the RBA is continuing to work in close partnership with the Province as proud collaborators in the economic development of our region.
“Together, we are building a resilient and prosperous Northwest BC—ensuring that every community thrives in an era of unprecedented industrial opportunity. Let’s embrace this vision and work collaboratively for a brighter future,” said Town of Smithers Mayor and Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Board Director, Gladys Atrill.
Formed in 2014, the RBA consists of 21 local governments, including 3 regional districts (North Coast, Bulkley-Nechako, Kitimat-Stikine) and their 18 member municipalities. Its goal is to ensure that the communities supporting BC’s industrial development receive equitable, long-term funding from these developments in order to meet the region’s infrastructure and service needs.
